Our first grade class will be full of fun and learning this year! First grade is such a pivotal year......a love for learning and a strong foundation of reading and math skills will be our goals.
Classroom rule: "Kindness repays kindness." We strive to develop good decision making skills in all situations and to treat one another as we want to be treated. We want to learn to "do what's right, because it's right."
Newsletters: A copy of the newsletter will go home each Monday in your child's homework folder. You may also view the newsletter on this web site. The newsletter will contain skills covered during the week and other important activities and events.
Classroom Management: The first weeks of school are spent learning classroom procedures and expectations. I strive to use encouragement and positive incentives to encourage responsible behavior. At times, it will be necessary for other consequences. We will be using a "behavior meter" to help students make good choices. Each day their clothespin will be placed in the green area. If reminders are needed regarding their choices, they will move their clip down to yellow. If they move to red, you will receive a note from them regarding what particular problems they encountered that day. They will also miss out on centers that day or the next. Clips that are in blue will necessitate a phone call in addition to the note home. Parents will be asked to sign the notes and return them to school the next day, so that their child can make a "clean start" and return to center activities that day. Each day that their clip remains on green, they will receive a blue ticket (which will make them eligible for our treasure chest drawing at the end of the day!
Tips for Parents: Reading to your child and letting them "read" to you is an important first step to your child's reading success. Reviewing vocabulary words and spelling words listed in each week's newsletter will also enable them to be successful. As you read with your child and they encounter an unknown word, help them ask themselves these questions: What makes sense? Do you see a part of the word you know? Can I sound it out?
Birthdays: We would love to help your child celebrate their birthday! You may send a treat, which we will enjoy at the end of the school day. Please notify me in advance of your plans, so that I can allow time for this fun activity!
Book Orders: Books may be ordered from Scholastic periodically. I will send home a brochure. These are very reasonably priced and will be a great way to build your child's home library. Orders are usually due within a few days of the brochure going home. Checks need to be made payable to Scholastic Books.
Contact me!! If you have a question or concern, please let me know immediately. You may call me at school: 366-2281 ext. 2813. Calling during my plan time is best.....1:45-2:20 daily. You can also email me at school and I will get back to you as quickly as possible.
Homework Policy
This year we'll be utilizing Homework Folders with a weekly log inside. Folders need to be returned to school each day, signed by an adult. Our homework schedule is as follows:
Monday: Read Phonics Story / Making Words lesson
Tuesday: Math / Study spelling & vocabulary words
Wednesday: Read Main Selection / Making Words lesson
Thursday: Math / Study spelling & vocabulary words
Parents and students are encouraged to spend a little time each night studying our weekly spelling and vocabulary lists. While reading is only required two nights a week, it's great to practice more than that!
